Standing Stone Care & Rehab Center (Monterey, TN) recently honored several ‘hometown heroes’ by inducting them into the facility’s ‘Hall of Fame’ cafe. Standing Stone Care & Rehab Center is one of 72 nursing communities operated by Louisville, Ky. based Signature HealthCARE. The Hall of fame Cafe concept was developed and launched company wide as a means of acknowledging the remarkable things residents and staff have accomplished in their lives.
Standing Stone Care & Rehab’s recent honorees are:
Ms. Sarah Norrod (resident) was born on October 30th 1911 to the late Sevier B. Phillips and Bell (Collins) Phillips. She was married for 46 years to Othar Norrod and they had two sons together. Ms. Norrod is 102 years young and is the oldest elder in our home here at Standing Stone Care & Rehab. She has witnessed historical changes throughout her lifetime, from horse and buggy days to the invention of the automobile, from coal oil lamps to the introduction of electricity, from hauling wood inside and fetching from the well to indoor heat and plumbing. She has always been regarded as an extremely hard working woman who took great pride in her family, home, and Baptist faith.
Mr. Carlos Morales (resident) is 93 years young and is of Spanish decent, but born and raised here in the United States. Mr. Morales has lived all over the world and speaks four different languages. He was a United States dignitary as well as an International Operator while serving a six year term in the U.S. Army. Mr. Morales also worked for the Coca-Cola Company for 14 years as a Chemical Engineer until he retired. Upon retirement Mr. Morales received a 20-year pension. During this time he paid his house off in Mexico and then presented a golden key to his wife to symbolize this accomplishment. He claims his success is much owed to his work ethic which he established as a young child working along side grown men on the family farm.
Valerie Padgett (stakeholder)-Valerie was born to John and Jean Ramsey on September 23, 1962 and is the 3rd eldest child out of 7 siblings. She is married to Bernard Padge and they have four amazing children together. Valerie attended school at Wilson Elementary and graduated from Monterey High-School. Valerie began her career at Standing Stone as a Certified Nursing Assistant while still in high-school. Over the years she has held many important positions such as; Social Services Director, Medical Records, Receptionist, and currently Admissions Director. We are truly blessed to have her in our facility and working with our elders. We truly value all of Valerie’s hard work and dedication over the last twenty-five years.
Bill McPhail (community member)-Bill McPhail was born May 15, 1940 in Harnett County, North Carolina to the late Berlena McPhail. Bill passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013 at the age of 72 years. Bill retired as foreman from Volunteer Electric Cooperative in Monterey after 30 years of dedicated service. Previous to his employment there he was employed at GTE, Appco, Ely, and Walker and was a supervisor at Black Tree. At the time of his death he was working as a funeral assistant at Goff Funeral Home. Bill was a faithful member of the Woodcliff Baptist Chruch and a former deacon, Sunday school teacher, and R.A. leader at Monterey First Baptist Church. Bill was also an avid fisherman and gardener. He also volunteered here at Standing Stone Care & Rehab Center and was very much loved and appreciated by the elders and stakeholders alike. Bill was faithful to visit each of the elders almost daily and he never met a stranger. He is missed beyond what words can express. Bill was preceded in death by his first wife of 33 years, Betty Miller McPhail. He is survived by wife Jearldean Phillips McPhail two daughters, and son-in-law; Monica and Rod Litteral and Felicia McPhail, five grandchildren; Taylor King, Nathan and Makayla Litteral, Noah and Eli Saylors, two step-daughters and son-in-law; Jean and Chris King and Tammy saylors, two sisters and brother-in-law; Jenny Allen, Cathy and Donald Collins, two brothers and sisters-in-law; Daniel and Peggy McPhail.
